On the way back from San Ignacio, a few of us stopped in Key Caulker for the day. Key Caulker is about 10 miles (30 minute boat ride) from San Pedro. They say that Key Caulker is like what San Pedro was 20 years ago, so the small town charm is abundant. After buying a few prints at Nelson Young’s gallery, we made our way to the “split” which is a channel that cuts through the middle of the island – courtesy of Hurricane Hattie. It took no more than a blink of an eye for me to realize that this was on THE BEST beach I have ever been to – great food and beverages from the Lazy Lizard, reggae music, white sands, a beautiful turquoise swimming hole, happy people from all over the world, and clean bathrooms. I was in true paradise for almost five hours. This is a beach that I know I will find again.
I was fascinated with the buildings in Key Caulker. I found the laundry mats to be especially unique. I loved the simple but colorful landscape, scenery, and quiet nooks. I had finally made it to Key Caulker. What took me so long?
